Firefly/Serenity Comments

As some of you may know from listening to the show, I’ve been watching Firefly for the first time.  I just finished it, including the movie Serenity.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Firefly, it’s a space western created by Joss Wheadon who is also known for Buffy and Angel.  My experience with Buffy and Angel was that they were too corny for me, but while Firefly has an occasional corny, ugh moment, it’s overall quite good.

The series follows a group of smugglers and convicts trying to survive on the outer planets of a solar system fiercely controlled by an entity known as the alliance.  The story takes place shortly after the end of a civil war between the independents of the outer planets and the alliance.

The characters really make this series.  It’s amazing how attached you get to the characters in 14 short episodes.

Unfortunately, the show was cancelled before it was able to tell its full story, so Serenity was made to bring closure to the series.

Serenity wasn’t a bad movie, but I was a little annoyed that they had to re-introduce the characters for a general audience.  I understand that it was necessary, but felt odd after watching the series.

Overall, the story would have played out much better if Firefly was allowed to continue as a series for several more seasons.

In conclusion, I highly recommend watching Firefly/Serenity.  If it was allowed to play out its story as intended, it could have been one of the best Sci-Fi shows of all time.  Star Trek will always be my favorite with Star Wars a close second, however, while I overall liked the new Battlestar Galactica slightly better than Firefly, I would rather watch Firefly than the last season of Battlestar.

BTW, the next episode of Trektinis is finished and will be posted soon.  We apologize for taking a while to get this one posted.
